Venezuela needs more Russian weapons - Chavez

Venezuela will continue to purchase weapons and intelligence equipment from Russia including tanks, President Hugo Chavez said on state television.

Venezuelan Vice President Ramon Carrizalez recently traveled to Moscow to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with a letter expressing the intention to buy weapons, Chavez said.

“I’ve approved most of the purchases and we’ll purchase as much as our possibilities allow,” Chavez was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. “We need to improve our ground, sea, and air power, and we’ll continue strengthening it.”

Chavez has increased economic and commercial ties with Russia over the past few years, buying more than $4.4 billion in weapons and promising access to Venezuelan oil fields for Russian companies.

Venezuela’s earlier Russian arms purchases include 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 50 military helicopters and 24 Su-30 jet fighters, according to a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency report.
