St. Petersburg Governor Calls for Burial of Lenins Body

Governor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko has called for Vladimir Lenins body to be removed from its Red Square mausoleum and buried.
Matvienko was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying on Monday it was necessary to bury Lenins body. In my view, its completely obvious, she said, adding, however, that the issue should be handled delicately and carefully.
Lenin, the Communist icon, died in 1924 and has been mummified and put on public display in the center of Moscow. The burial of his body has been disputed since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The first Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, was unable to remove Lenins body from the mausoleum due to strong communist opposition forces but he ordered the removal of the guard of honor from its post.
At the end of September Putins envoy to the Central Federal District, Georgy Poltavchenko, said Lenins body should be removed from its granite tomb on Red Square and buried in a cemetery along with the remains of other Bolshevik dignitaries. He added he was voicing his private opinion on the matter and did not elaborate.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier he was against burying Lenins body.

Relations between Russia and Ukraine are facing a potentially major rupture over the price of natural gas. Russias state-controlled energy giant Gazprom is moving to raise Ukraines annual bill by more than $1 billion by ending below-market prices that were part of an effort to maintain the Kremlins influence with its neighbor.

A crowd of at least 1,500 people gathered in the centre of Moscow on a cold winter day to to take part in the Moscow without Nationalism rally. The march touched on a simmering issue of rising hate and crimes against foreigners, particularly migrant workers from other parts of the old Soviet Union.
