The president of the south Russian republic of Ingushetia has been attacked by a suicide bomber, possibly the sister of a militant killed by the police, sources in law-enforcement agencies say.

Yunus Bek Yevkurov was flown to Moscow for complicated surgery after a suicide bomber’s car exploded beside his as he drove to work on Monday. He has received numerous injuries and has not regained consciousness since the attack.

According to the police source quoted by Itar Tass, the suicide bomber was a local woman called Pyatimat Mutaliyeva, whose brother, confirmed militant Khasan Mutaliyev, was killed by police officers in February.

Mutaliyeva was once detained on charges of being involved in a militant group. The police suspected she was being trained for a suicide bomber’s mission, but let her go due to lack of proof.

Another source in the police told RIA Novosti that her involvement in the attack has not been confirmed yet.

The powerful blast that destroyed Yevkurov’s car, killing two and wounding five people, ripped the vehicle to pieces. The only body part of the bomber which remains relatively intact is the attacker’s left foot, which will be subjected to ferensic invesitigation.
