Police kill 9 militants in Russia's North Caucasus

29 Jul, 10:27 PM

Russian security forces killed eight rebels in the volatile Dagestan region Tuesday, after another militant was killed in neighboring Chechnya, AFP writes.

The FSB security service killed eight rebels early Tuesday after ambushing them in a forest near the Dagestani regional capital Makhachkala, an FSB spokesman told the RIA-Novosti news agency.

"As a result of the clash that took place overnight in the forest between the village of Talgi and Makhachkala, eight fighters were eliminated," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Separately, authorities in Chechnya announced a rebel had been killed Monday during an operation in the Urus-Martan district, south of the Chechen capital Grozny, Interfax and RIA-Novosti reported.

The clashes came after a suicide bomber killed six people and himself Sunday outside a concert hall in Grozny.

Deadly clashes between government forces and Islamist rebels are common in Chechnya and Dagestan, both of which are predominantly Muslim regions in the North Caucasus mountains.
