An unemployed man from South Russia told police officers that he used cannabis plants found in his house to study photosynthesis.

The incident took place in the Rostov Region in South Russia, the press service of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service reported Wednesday. Police suspected the 28-year old former convict of dealing illegal drugs and decided to search his house. They found six marijuana plants growing in pots on windowsills, but the man claimed he was growing them only to study photosynthesis. However, besides the plants, police found about 1.6 kilograms of dried marijuana on the premises.

A criminal case has been started for illegal drug production, an offence that in Russia carries a penalty of up to 12 years imprisonment.
