Moscow police close down over 40 gambling houses

Operatives of the Moscow Police Department for Resisting Economic Crime have stopped the operations of over 40 gambling institutions and opened criminal cases of fraud, tax-evasion and illegal entrepreneurship against the managers of 20.

The head of the department's press group, Filipp Zolotnitsky, told Interfax that Moscow is conducting a large-scale operation to prevent gambling crimes .

Over 100 outlets have been checked and 40 closed down. Over 500 arcade machines were seized from 30 outlets.

Zolotnitsky said the most wide spread offences were operating without a gambling license, the absence of documents for arcade machines, the illegal use of trademarks, tax-evasion, defrauding clients and personnel defrauding the institutions. He said the operation will continue.

The law that will stop the operations of all gambling institutions in Russia, outside of four assigned zones, comes into force on July 1.

According to the law signed in December 2006, the four special gambling zones are to appear in Russia on July 1, 2009. In 2007 the Russian Parliament passed a law banning gambling facilities anywhere other than in these special zones. The gambling zones are located in the Altai Region in South Siberia, the Far Eastern Maritime Territory, the Rostov Region in South Russia and the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.
