Tragedy on the Moscow River as boaters hit high-voltage line

Two men were killed and two more severely injured when the mast of their catamaran hit an electric line on the Moscow River outside the Russian capital this weekend, Life.ru reports. The craft had just set off. It passed under a bridge and hit an electric line on the other side of it, having traveled only 30 meters (98 feet).

There was a total of nine people aboard the catamaran. All of them were servicemen stationed at the same base. They were experienced boaters and had sailed together before. Petr Shutikhin and Viktor Milekhin, both 26, were killed instantly. They were rowing together on the same side of the craft. Both leave behind wives and children.

The other two oarsmen are in critical condition. Andrey Vasilenko-Prozhogin, 28, was hospitalized for electrocution and burns. Ivan Myagkov, 27, was also electrocuted and received burns. He suffered a heart attack induced by the shock. Their lives were saved by the fact that their oars were not in the water at the moment of impact with the power line. Aluminum from the boat’s frame melted onto their clothes. They are awaiting transfer from hospital in the village of Ruza to a facility in Moscow.

The five other people on board the boat were uninjured because they were not touching any metal parts at the time of the incident. The catamaran’s mast was five meters high.
