Police break up Russia auto protest

Police on Sunday broke up an unofficial protest by drivers in the city of Vladivostok, in Russia’s Far East , the RIA Novosti news agency reports. Motorists were protesting against higher tariffs on imported cars and a possible ban on imported cars with right-side steering wheels.

Protesters gathered on Korabelnaya Embankment, where an open microphone was made available for those demanding the resignation of regional authorities and the federal government and elimination of higher duties on imported cars.

Prior to the event, the Prosecutor General’s Office is reported to have issued a warning to the organizers of the protest against breaches of the law and called on Vladivostok residents to refrain from participating in unauthorized rallies.

Following law-enforcement officials’ calls to disperse, some of the protesters left. Several of those who refused to obey were detained and taken to local police stations for further investigation, RIA Novosti reports.
